Craft Your Own Primitive Sleeping Mat – Lightweight, Warm, and Portable!

Step back in time and learn the timeless art of making a tule mat, a vital survival skill that blends ingenuity and practicality. In this hands-on class, you’ll craft a lightweight, rollable sleeping mat that’s perfect for wilderness adventures. Using natural materials like tule reeds, you’ll discover how to create a mat that not only provides excellent insulation against the cold ground but is also easy to transport on your next journey.

Harvest Wild Materials

Learn to identify and harvest tule, while also learning about the plant and its many uses.

Process & Prepare

Learn how to process and prepare tule in order to make a sleeping mattress or blanket for insulation.

Weave & Finish Your Mat

Learn the weaving process to make a tight and secure mattress and see how these can be packed and stored.

Discover The Ancient Art Of Tule Mats!

During the workshop, you'll:
 

  • Discover how to identify and harvest Tule

  • Learn the basics of milkweed cordage and harvesting wild fibers

  • Prepare and process wild materials with only a knife

  • Learn essential weaving skills for making mats

  • Finish and test you sleeping mat

  • Learn the history and uses on Tule

 

This class is more than just a lesson in primitive craftsmanship—it’s an opportunity to connect with the resourcefulness of our ancestors while building something truly functional and rewarding. You’ll gain skills in gathering and preparing natural materials, weaving techniques, and even tips for using your tule mat in various survival scenarios.

Whether you're camping, embarking on a survival challenge, or simply looking to deepen your connection with the natural world, this class will leave you with a durable and essential tool you made with your own two hands. Come ready to weave, learn, and be inspired by the ingenuity of primitive living

YOUTH UNDER 12 ATTEND FREE with a paying adult and can use the parent or guardians supplies.
